The ICA Experts Group on Archival Description (EGAD) is pleased to announce the release for public comment the initial draft of the first part of a two-part standard for archival description named Records in Contexts (RiC). When completed, the standard will include a conceptual model (RiC-CM), and a formal ontology (RiC-O). The current release of the initial draft of RiC-CM will remain available for public comment until 31 December 2016. A draft of RiC-O will be released for public comment late in 2016.

RiC-CM is available here: http://www.ica.org/egad-ric-conceptual-model-ric-cm-01pdf

Comments should be sent to: egad@ica.org

At the ICA Congress in Seoul, Korea in September 2016, three representatives from the EGAD will provide an overview and introduction to RiC on Thursday, 8 September, 15:00-16:30. The session will be available in Chinese, English, French, and Korean.

Since 2012, with members from thirteen countries, the EGAD has been developing the new standard for the description of records based on archival principles. In the course of its work it has taken into consideration critiques of current practices, established and emerging national conceptual models as well as the models of allied professional communities, and the opportunities presented by new and emerging communication technologies. The objective of the standard is to reconcile, integrate, and build on the four existing standards: General International Standard Archival Description (ISAD(G)); International Standard Archival Authority Records—Corporate Bodies, Persons, and Families (ISAAR(CPF)); International Standard Description of Functions (ISDF); and International Standard Description of Institutions with Archival Holdings (ISDIAH).

The EGAD looks forward to receiving comments on the draft RiC-CM.
